PT Patient Relations
More Time With Patients During Visits = Less Patient Visits.
All of our patients receive 20 minutes of direct one-on-one
care during each visit. Other facilities average 10-15 minutes
of direct one-on-one care per patient. We believe the added
time we spend with each patient allows for more effective
use of manual therapy techniques, better patient education,
increased patient understanding of exercise protocols, and
getting to know our patients better.
In addition to the 20 minutes of one-on-one time, each patient
receives an additional 25-40 minutes of supervised care from
their treating therapist. Our clinic set-up allows us to supervise
patients performing their exercises while we provide the one-on-one
care with another patient as described above.
We do not
leave out patients on their own once their 20 minute one-on-one
time is finished!!!
Each of our therapists on average treats no more than 2 patients
per hour, with 3 patients per hour being the absolute limit.
We also spend at least 45 minutes of one-on-one time with
all first time patients. We have found that the extra time
we take with our patients increases their satisfaction of
our service as noted in the comments we receive from our patients
and the physicians who refer them.
Finally, we try not “trade” patients among our
therapists. We believe there is better consistency of care
when a patient is seen by the same therapist from start to
finish. In the instance that a patient has to be scheduled
with a therapist other than the one they started with, our
therapists will communicate verbally about that patient’s
plan of care before the appointment.
Who Ever Heard of A Patient Going to Physical Therapy –
And Enjoying It at the Same Time?
We know that going to physical therapy for many patients
is not the thing they want to do most. So we take pride in
making their experience with us as fun as possible. That means
we need to get to know them better in order to gain trust
and increase their comfort level with us. Once we have done
so the fun begins.
So how do we get to know our patients better? During our 20
minutes of one on one time with each patient, we try to spend
10 minutes providing our patients information about their
injury or condition, and 10 minutes learning about them and
having them learn more about us on a more personal level.
Once a comfort level has been established, we make every effort
to get them to laugh with us, with other patients, at us,
or at themselves. Our goal is to create some camaraderie between
patients and staff members. This helps all of us to achieve
the patient goals we have set while having some fun. We want
all of our patients to laugh at least one time during each
session they attend. So far our efforts have been very successful.
We have a 90% compliancy rate and a 98% satisfaction rate
among our patients as evidenced by testimonials they have
provided us.
Physical Therapy – An Educational Experience
What good is it if you do not have a complete understanding
of your condition or injury when starting physical therapy?
How frustrated would you become if you didn’t know how
a particular exercise was helping you to get better? These
are questions our staff considers when working with all patients.
We want our patients to be informed about their injury and
our plan of care. That is why we spend at least 10 minutes
of one-on-one education time during each session helping them
to understand their condition, how it affects the rest of
their body and their life in general, and how the activities
and techniques we utilize will help them.
We reinforce the
information we provide our patients every time we see them.
We know a more informed patient is a more motivated patient.
Our results show this as patients spend less time with us
because they come to value the information they receive and
recognize the importance of independent exercise programs.
Their compliance with the exercises we prescribe outside of
the clinic increases and the meet their rehab goals faster.
Each patient receives and average 2 hours of education during
their time in treatment.
NO STIFFS ALLOWED!!!
No personality, bookworms are not employed at All-Access
Physical Therapy. We want our administrative and physical
therapy staff to have personality. In addition to having at
least three years of clinical experience in an outpatient
setting, all physical therapy staff candidates must be able
to interact appropriately on both professional and personal
levels with our patients. We know that when patients are not
comfortable with their therapist due to personality conflicts, then our ability to address their concerns
and meet their rehab goals is compromised. That is why if
our potential new staff member can’t interact with us
during an interview, then we know they will not fit in with
our patients.
Of course we have policies in place that our staff members
must adhere to in regards to appropriately interacting with
our patients. Additionally, we have patient compliment and
complaint tracking procedures to make sure each of our staff
members is providing effective care while making their treatment
plans fun and educational for our patients. We have interviewed
a few of the most experienced therapists with the most knowledge
about how to help patients overcome their injuries. We didn’t
hire them because we didn’t think they were effective
communicators, nor had the personality to work in our clinic
setting. That is why we have a No Stiffs Allowed Policy for
new hires. That is why our patients leave more satisfied with
PT while achieving their rehab goals.
